Atlas

Role

Lead Engineer

A six-axis collaborative arm that learns fine motion from a single demonstration and slows itself down the moment a person steps into its workspace.

A six-axis collaborative arm that learns fine motion from a single demonstration and slows itself down the moment a person steps into its workspace.

The brief

A ceramics studio in Manises wanted a robot that could glaze and trace patterns alongside its artisans — not behind a cage. Atlas had to be precise to half a millimetre and gentle enough to share a bench.

What I built

I designed the torque-sensing joints, the impedance controller and a demonstration interface where makers guide the arm by hand. A depth camera maps the shared workspace at 90 Hz and scales speed continuously with human distance.

After six months on the studio floor, Atlas runs eight-hour shifts with zero safety stops caused by false positives.
